The Taxpayer Advocate Service and Your Rights as a Taxpayer

The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) is “Your Voice at the IRS”.  It is an independent organization within the IRS. The mission of TAS is to protect your rights as a taxpayer, and help you with tax problems you can’t resolve on your own. TAS can offer you free help if you have a tax problem that you haven’t been able to resolve with the IRS. If you qualify, you’ll be assigned to one advocate who will do everything possible to resolve your problem.

The Taxpayer Advocate created a Taxpayer Bill of Rights which was adopted by the IRS. It applies to all taxpayers in their dealings with the IRS. The Taxpayer Bill of Rights groups the existing rights in the tax code into ten fundamental rights, and makes them clear, understandable, and accessible.
